IST ALC AUGMENTATION SQUADRON I wish I had a full history of the 1st ALC Augmentation Squadron, but I joined the unit in mid-1973 after getting off active duty in Dec '72. Each of the Air Logistic Centers (Warner Robins, Oklahoma City, etc) had an off-site reserve unit that would serve as the core of a reconstitution team in the event of nuclear war or natural disaster. We had 30 officers and 40 enlisted personnel representing the major functions of the ALCs ... maintenance, logistics, security police, plans, admin, and more. In my five years with the squadron ('73 until deactivation in '78), we had a grand total of one plane land during an active duty tour -- a C-7 from Dobbins AFB GA bringing paychecks that had been misrouted. That, the oil furnace exploding while the CO was in the john, and a couple of wartime scenario practice exercises were about the most exciting things that happened. However, I've got to say this was the most enjoyable unit I ever served with ... I think all of us looked forward to our every other month drill weekend and our annual two-week active duty tour (which always included a great party at the end). And the people in Moultrie were just as friendly toward us as they apparently were when the base was active. I'm attaching a couple of pictures of Spence circa 1974 ... the base welcome sign and the one building we used (photo taken from inside the control tower). Thomas H.
